Before Kenny McNeill became a key GIS staff member, he attended SUNY Geneseo where he graduated with a degree in Geography and a minor in Environmental Studies. Lucky enough, he landed at PWGC where his Geography degree and Environmental Studies minor has created a positive impact on his career. Before we get into Kenny’s PWGC career, let’s see how his education paved his way to PWGC.
At Geneseo, Kenny’s core major focus was Geographic Information Systems (GIS). He took numerous GIS classes that enhanced his understanding of GIS software, its applications, and the power GIS possesses to move a project along. His classes, conversations with his professors and fellow students, as well as understanding of the applications provided him with a solid foundation that he uses daily as a GIS Analyst.
While GIS was Kenny’s foundational pillar, his Environmental Studies minor broadened his perspective, and has given him an understanding of the goals, objectives, mission, and processes of the projects at PWGC. Kenny said, “Understanding the environmental intricacies of our projects enhances my ability to contribute meaningful deliverables to the team.”
Kenny thanks his hands-on experience gained from GIS classes in college for his smooth transition to his role at PWGC. With prior experience in various GIS software, he found himself seamlessly fitting in, where these skills became second nature.
Beyond GIS, he has been gaining experience with new software such as Civil 3D and Surfer, combining his foundational knowledge with new skills. Kenny said, “It has been interesting being able to combine my skills with new software, and learning how GIS can be applied to different projects beyond what I have done before.”
Since starting at PWGC, he believes universities should highlight the importance of acquiring a spectrum of technical skills. He has noticed that versatility is key; possessing a variety of skills makes you more valuable and opens doors to engaging in diverse projects.
Kenny is grateful for the well-rounded education SUNY Geneseo provided him which has laid the foundation for his career path. The combination of GIS experience, environmental insights, and an openness to acquiring new skills has significantly contributed to his success.
