Long Island Schools are Testing Positive for Lead

May 18, 2016 / Industry News

School water quality is front-page news across the nation.

From the ongoing catastrophe in Flint, Michigan to recent reports of high lead levels in several schools in New Jersey and Long Island, public concern about lead exposure is growing. Six schools on Long Island recently tested positive for high levels of lead in various tap water sources. This follows on the heels of widely publicized outbreaks of Legionnaire’s disease on Long Island and in the Bronx in 2015.

PWGC recently completed lead testing of more than 44 New York City schools and acts as the legionella consultant for large healthcare systems such as Northwell Health. Our water quality experts would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule.

Children & Lead Poisoning

Lead exposure can lead to serious mental and physical health problems and developmental delays. Children and infants are more susceptible to lead poisoning than adults. Negative health outcomes include impaired mental development, IQ deficits, shorter attention span, and lower birth weight. Even low levels of lead exposure have been linked to lowered IQ, ADHD, and damaged nerves.
