We evaluated ways to successfully eradicate/minimize invasive aquatic species in Canaan Lake to allow for additional recreational activities.

PWGC was selected to evaluate alternatives to successfully eradicate/minimize invasive aquatic species in Canaan Lake to allow for additional recreational activities.

PWGC provided professional engineering services in order to:

  • Evaluate the current condition of the invasive aquatic species in Canaan Lake
    Review available environmental studies and reports related to the past history of Canaan Lake
  • Develop remedial alternatives along with constraints and costs for discussion with stakeholders
  • Meeting with regulatory agencies to discuss similar projects and determine what remedial strategies may be allowed
  • Meetings with the public to discuss the strategy and obtain stakeholder input
  • Design the new culvert and sluice gate to draw down the lake

Project Details

PWGC staff members provided engineering evaluation of proposed dewatering effort, preliminary design of drawdown culvert, overall project management, coordination services with various government agencies and stakeholders, evaluated sediment quality for disposal and pricing options and prepared alternative analysis for evaluation.

An unique aspect to this project is that although the tasks of project were common to PWGC (document review, sediment quality review, coordination with NYSDEC, water table drawdown calculations), PWGC had to really focus on new approaches not used locally to solve a problem with serious permitting,  responsible party, and cost constraints.
