Civil Site Engineering

PWGC engineers development sites from pre-design through municipal acceptance, on projects ranging from single commercial parcels to area wide work for school districts and public agencies.

How PWGC approaches a civil site

Every development project has its own identity, so the design follows the site and the client objectives rather than a template. Three things shape how our engineers work.

We start with what the site will not allow.

Shallow groundwater, poor soils, wetlands, floodplain and existing drainage ways constrain a plan before a line is drawn. PWGC investigates those conditions in pre-design through geotechnical investigation, hydrological studies, wetland and floodplain investigation and yield mapping.

We design to the reviewing agency’s standard.

A village stormwater requirement, a county health department regulation, a NYSDEC permit and an Army Corps approval are four different tests. PWGC prepares the applications and carries them through approval, including community meetings where the project calls for them.

We stay on through construction.

Our engineers prepare bidding documents and construction cost opinions, review shop drawings, perform field observation and issue the certifications a municipality needs to accept the work.

Proven at every scale

01

The Shipyard at Port Jeff Harbor

PWGC evaluated storage options and designed drainage for a shallow groundwater site traversed by Old Mill Creek, meeting the Village requirement for a three inch rainfall event.

20,147 cubic feet of stormwater storage

02

Montauk Yacht Club

PWGC selected sequenced batch reactor technology for a 50,000 gallon per day plant able to handle sewage flows that vary weekly and seasonally at the facility.

81.5% lower nitrogen loading

03

NYC Department of Parks and Recreation

PWGC sited and designed irrigation lakes, inlet and pump stations and well supplies and prepared freshwater wetlands permit applications for NYSDEC and the Army Corps.

9 irrigation lakes, four boroughs

How the work runs

Pre-design

PWGC performs site assessment, feasibility studies, zoning analysis, geotechnical or hydrological investigation, wetland, floodplain review and SEQRA work.

Design

We prepare site plans, grading and drainage, stormwater management, utility and pavement plans, water supply and sanitary engineering and foundation design.

Approvals

PWGC handles stormwater permitting and compliance, variance and change of zone applications, traffic studies, agency permitting and community meetings.

Construction

We produce bidding documents, specifications and cost opinions, then provide shop drawing review, construction administration, field observation and certifications for municipal acceptance.

Pre-design: site assessment and inspection, feasibility studies, schematic plans and sketches, environmental assessments, environmental impact statements, zoning analysis, change of zone and variance applications, floodplain and wetland investigation, wetland permitting, hydrological studies, yield mapping, traffic letters and studies, geotechnical investigation, SEQRA. Design and engineering: foundation engineering, site removal and demolition plans, site plans and master plans, grading and drainage plans, builders pavement plans, stormwater management designs, stormwater permitting and compliance, wastewater and sanitary engineering, utility plans and coordination, approvals and permitting, water supply design, electrical and mechanical support, geothermal systems, geotechnical engineering. Construction: project management, construction and bidding documents, specifications, construction cost opinions, community meetings, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans, construction administration, observation and inspection, shop drawing review, bid analysis, certifications for municipal acceptance.

Questions we get asked

A civil site engineer takes everything outside the building envelope from raw site to approved, buildable plan: grading, drainage, stormwater, utilities, water supply, sanitary systems, paving and access. PWGC works across all three phases of that effort. Our pre-design work establishes whether a site supports the program at all. Our design work produces the plans and construction documents. Our construction phase staff review shop drawings, observe the work in the field and prepare the certifications a municipality requires before it accepts the improvements.
