After a historic storm delivered 13.57 inches of rain within 24 hours, PWGC evaluated the hospital's drainage infrastructure.
Southside Hospital retained us to conduct a study to evaluate the existing drainage infrastructure and to make recommendations on how to alleviate future flooding after a historic storm delivered 13.57 inches of rain to the Islip area within 24 hours. Southside Hospital provides critical care services and it must be prepared for and protected against any number of natural hazards that could potentially impact hospital operations.
Project Details
PWGC’s ROLE:
An analysis of the hospital’s drainage system was performed, which used the August 2014 storm as the basis for the analysis.
The following recommendations were included:
- Refurbishment of existing, non-functioning pump stations.
- Installation of a new gravity flow pipes to redirect storm water overflow from the leaching galleys to Penataquit Creek, and the installation of an overflow pipe to discharge storm water to Aletta Place South during extreme high intensity storm events.
- Installation of addition catch basins.
- Installation of additional manholes. Manholes were to be installed when the storm water pipe changes direction or transitions to a larger or smaller pipe.
