Last week, PWGC President Dr. Paul Grosser led a drilling demonstration for students in Stony Brook University’s Civil Engineering Department. The event allowed the SBU students to gain valuable hands-on experience as they work towards their engineering degrees.

Dr. Grosser, who is on SBU’s Civil Engineering Advisory Board, believes there is a strong need for real-world experience to supplement classroom education in order to maximize the educational experience for engineering students. At the drilling demo, he discussed the civil engineering industry with the students and answered students’ questions following the exhibition.
The drilling demonstration was conducted by Center Moriches-based Land, Air, Water Environmental Services, Inc. (LAWES), whose representatives provided details about the drilling process, making reference to details such as blow counts, and provided the students with advice regarding drill operation.
Overall, the event was a great experience for all parties involved. Kaitlin Brown, Instructional Support Specialist, Undergraduate Laboratory Instructor with Stony Brook’s Civil Engineering Department, indicated she has received very positive feedback from the students, who suggested the event be held again next year for the upcoming junior class!
