A groundbreaking was held on the City of Glen Cove’s waterfront to celebrate the efforts of RXR Glen Isle Partners LLP (the pairing of Uniondale-based RXR Realty and Posillico Development) to redevelop the city’s former industrial waterfront into a $1 billion mixed-use development.
PWGC has played a lead role in assisting RXR with the environmental assessment, remediation and reporting of the assembly of parcels that make up the Garvies Point project.
RXR Realty, the Uniondale-based developer of the $1 billion, 56-acre Garvies Point mixed-use development on Glen Cove’s waterfront, held a groundbreaking ceremony adjacent to the Glen Cove Ferry Terminal on Dec. 6 to celebrate the project’s progress to date.
Representing one of the most significant site redevelopments on Long Island, the efforts at Garvies Point have been years in the making and has involved the remediation and repositioning of several parcels on and in proximity to the eastern side of Glen Cove Creek. Most of the parcels required significant environmental assessment, remediation and regulatory reporting based in their past, heavy industrial uses.
Among the better known parcels in need of environmental attention were the former Li Tungsten, a federally-designated Superfund site, and the former landfill and New York State classified Inactive Hazardous Waste site known as Captain’s Cove, both of which play lead roles in the overall redevelopment plan.
Among the attendees were RXR CEO Scott Rechler, City of Glen Cove Mayor Reginald Spinello and key members of P.W. Grosser Consulting, Inc.’s (PWGC) Environmental Division, who have played a key roles regarding the assessment, remediation and regulatory reporting related to the environmental issues associated with the properties that account for the Garvies Point site.
PWGC associates in attendance at the event included Senior Vice President of PWGC’s Environmental Group James Rhodes, CPG, Project Manager Derek Ersbak, and Field Hydrogeologist Amanda Racaniello. All have been working synergistically with representatives of RXR – along with other consultants associated – to advance the complex multi-stage development in accordance with its aggressive completion timeline.
The Garvies Point redevelopment is slated for the construction of 555 rental apartments, 555 for-sale condominiums, and approximately 75,000 square feet of retail and office space. In addition, 28 acres of the development will consist of waterfront esplanades and parks.
